Sam’s Story: Turning a Mess into a Masterpiece

In 1996, my life was at rock bottom. I was broke, depressed, and barely getting by. Most nights, I slept on borrowed floor space or in my old ‘82 Buick Regal. I had no direction, no motivation, just a negative attitude that kept me stuck in a rut. I felt overwhelmed by frustration and negativity.

It was over a simple cup of coffee that a friend gave me what I call a positive "Kick in the Attitude." He challenged me to change my thinking by focusing on the good in my life. This inspired me to look for the masterpiece in the messiness of life.  Up until that moment, my mind had been stuck in the habit of always seeing the negative in everything. But I realized that if I wanted a better life, I had to make a change—starting with my attitude. That moment changed everything for me.

Since then, my life’s work has been studying attitude, resilience, optimism, and leadership. I’ve spoken to nearly every industry, inspired audiences as large as 75,000 people, and written more than 30 books to help others build a mindset that not only works for them but also rewards them.

My mission is simple: To empower others to think better so they can live better, feel better, solve better, create better, connect better and do better.

About My Art

My artwork is built on a very simple yet powerful principle: look for the masterpiece in the mess. Life is unpredictable, full of challenges, setbacks, and unexpected twists and turns. But have you ever noticed that what we focus on, we feed. What we focus on grows. So, the concept of my artwork ties into our attitude.  If we edit our perspective and look for something good even in difficult moments, we can discover something meaningful and special.

It’s easy to get overwhelmed by our frustrations, but choosing a better perspective determines what we see. When we choose to see beyond the mess, we open ourselves  up to discover something truly remarkable—and that makes all the difference.

When we choose to see beyond the mess and look for meaning in our struggles, we begin to uncover something valuable—growth, wisdom, strength, and even new opportunities. What may seem like chaos at first often turns out to be part of a bigger, more meaningful picture or painting. My artwork is a form of encouragement that reminds us to recognize that within every challenge lies the potential for something truly great. That’s how we find the masterpiece hidden in the mess.

I am a self-taught abstract, expressive artist who loves vibrant and rich colors.  I am not the world’s greatest artist, but what makes my art very special is that I have the world’s greatest time creating it.

I would consider my artwork style messy, expressive and adventurous. I love using palette knives to create texture and movement in my work.
